Key Features
Applications
Bolts, nuts and washers are the basic fixing set for joining steel, timber and machinery. A bolt passes through the parts, a washer spreads the load and a nut locks it. Falcon Link TR supplies hex bolts, nuts and washers in common metric sizes from Sharjah for building and workshop use.
What is a fix bolt?
Buyers in the UAE often ask for a "fix bolt" when they want a standard hex bolt with its nut and washer. The set is used for steel supports, brackets, frames and machinery. The right set depends on diameter, length, strength grade and finish.
Matching chart: bolt, nut and washer
| Bolt size | Nut spanner size | Flat washer outer diameter | Hole in the part |
|---|---|---|---|
| M8 | 13 mm | About 16 mm | About 9 mm |
| M10 | 17 mm | About 20 mm | About 11 mm |
| M12 | 19 mm | About 24 mm | About 13.5 mm |
| M16 | 24 mm | About 30 mm | About 17.5 mm |
| M20 | 30 mm | About 37 mm | About 22 mm |
Sizes are standard metric values and can vary slightly by standard and maker. Confirm with your drawing.
Strength grades: what do 4.6 and 8.8 mean?
| Grade | Strength | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 4.6 | Lower strength | General fixing, non-critical joints |
| 8.8 | Higher strength | Structural and load-bearing joints |
The first number relates to tensile strength and the second to yield. For structural joints, follow the engineer's specified grade.
Finish: zinc plated, galvanised or stainless?
| Finish | Where it suits |
|---|---|
| Zinc plated | Dry indoor use |
| Hot-dip galvanised | Outdoor use and general site work |
| Stainless steel (304 or 316) | Coastal, wet and marine locations |
Types of washers
- Flat washer: spreads the load and protects the surface.
- Spring washer: helps resist loosening from vibration.
- Penny (large) washer: spreads load over timber or thin sheet.
How to choose bolts, nuts and washers
- Choose the diameter from the drawing or the load.
- Pick the length: through the parts, plus a few threads beyond the nut.
- Choose the grade the engineer specifies.
- Choose the finish for the environment.
- Add the right washers and a few spares.
Common mistakes
- Mixing bolt and nut sizes, such as metric with inch.
- Using a bolt that is too short, so too few threads engage.
- Using a low grade bolt in a structural joint.
- Skipping washers on soft materials.
- Over-tightening until the thread strips.
Reading the markings on a bolt head
A bolt head carries two marks. One is the maker's mark and the other is the strength class, such as 4.6 or 8.8. If a bolt has no marking at all, treat it as the lowest grade. For structural and safety joints, buy only bolts that carry a clear class marking and match the specification.
Coarse thread pitch by size
| Bolt size | Standard coarse pitch | Note |
|---|---|---|
| M8 | 1.25 mm | Fine pitch exists but is less common |
| M10 | 1.5 mm | The usual choice for general work |
| M12 | 1.75 mm | Pair with a matching M12 nut |
| M16 | 2.0 mm | Used for heavier frames |
| M20 | 2.5 mm | Used for structural steel and bases |
How long should the bolt be?
Add the thickness of every part being joined, plus the washers, plus the nut, then allow two or three threads to show beyond the nut. Round up to the next stock length. A bolt that is too long snags and wastes money, and one that is too short will not carry its rated load.
Where each set is used on site
- Steel brackets and ductwork supports.
- Machinery bases and guards.
- Scaffold, temporary works and access platforms.
- Timber to steel connections with penny washers.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a bolt and a screw?
A bolt passes through the parts and is tightened with a nut. A screw cuts or screws into a part and does not need a nut. Both are fasteners but are used differently.
What grade of bolt is used for structural work?
Grade 8.8 is common for load-bearing joints, but the grade is set by the engineer, not the supplier. Always follow the structural drawing and the specification for the joint, and ask us for the grade that matches it.
What does 8.8 mean on a bolt?
It is a strength class marking on the head. Grade 8.8 bolts have higher tensile strength than grade 4.6, so they suit heavier and structural joints.
Which washer goes with which bolt?
A flat washer for the bolt diameter, usually slightly larger than the hole, and a spring washer if vibration is a concern. Our chart above lists typical washer sizes.
Is a galvanised bolt corrosion-proof in the UAE?
No finish is fully corrosion-proof. Galvanised bolts last well outdoors inland and in most site conditions, but for seafront, very humid and wet locations stainless steel is the safer long-term choice.
How do I convert an inch bolt to metric?
Do not swap sizes without checking. Sizes such as 3/8 inch and M10 are close but not the same thread. Send us a sample or a photo and we will match it.
